The Central Pacific’s largest city, Puntarenas (meaning “sandy point”), sits on a long, narrow peninsula or spit in the Gulf of Nicoya, a short 62 miles from San José. The town itself is about three miles long but just a few blocks wide. It is also the capital of the province of the same name.
