Potential retirees should know that Costa Rica is near the top of the list when it comes to individual freedom

One of the most important things to consider when choosing a country to live or retire is personal freedom. According to the Human Freedom Index, Costa Rica ranks second in Latin America. The aim of this study is to see which countries in the region respect individual freedom, religious freedom, freedom of association and the right to assemble. In addition, women’s rights and the right to express one’s sexual orientation were also taken into consideration as well as seventy-six other factors.

The only country in the area that stood out above Costa Rica was Chile despite having violated human rights during the Pinochet dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s. Uruguay finished in third place followed by Panamá and Perú.

Hong Kong, Switzerland, New Zealand, Ireland, Denmark, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and Finland headed the list of countries in the category of individual freedom. While Libia was ranked in last place out of the 159 countries studied.

This honor is just one of many which attest to the quality of life that exists in this country. Couple this with the fact that the Costa Rica has NO military or terrorism and is never mentioned in a negative light by the international news media, and you have one of the best countries in the world to live or retire in my opinion.

  1. I cannot count the CR web sites I have visited checking out medical . I say that because there are thousands of retired u.S, military who have a medical plan that pays for care in a foreign country. It is called “Tricare.” There is a follow on program called “Tricare For Life.
I HAVE NOT RUN ACROSS A WORD ABOUT IT. Do you have any information on it?
BTW, I am up there in years and I do speak Spanish pretty well. (ADDED): A community of like ex-pats with a few like me would be great. My wife is considerably younger than I and speaks three languages now (Dutch, English, and a local patois used in Suriname (learning Spanish from me, to make a fourth). She is from Suriname.
